CHAPTER SIX

Two women had gone missing in the space of a day. It sounded like the plot of a late-night procedural show.

Nathaniel wasn't sure what to think when he'd arrived at the store to pick up Eve.

He'd shown up early because he didn't have anything to keep him away. He'd already made up his mind to step in when he arrived and just let Eve know that he was there and eager to spend time with her.

That had been his intention.

What he actually found was a store in chaos and a single worker behind the counter.

Conrad.

Nathaniel's gut reaction told him that there was something wrong.

He didn't want to be a jerk, but he also didn't have the patience to wait for the extensive line at the counter to be whittled down, so he did what he had to, to get to the front.

Nathaniel had already removed his suit coat in the car. He tugged heartlessly at the buttons of his cuffs, not caring a bit that he was likely warping the buttonholes with his frustrated tugs.

"Ladies? Gentlemen?"

His voice could fill a room easily, and everyone turned to look at him.

"I have an offer for all of you in line. I need to talk to the owner here." He gestured at Conrad and saw the other man wavering on his feet, his face sickly pale. "I need just a minute or two of his time and in exchange for that, I'm willing to pay for whatever you have in your baskets at this moment."

Unsurprisingly, no one argued with him.

The handful of people closest to the counter stepped aside to make room.

Nathaniel leaned on the counter, bracing his weight on the knuckles of his fisted hands. "Conrad?"

The Conrad's eyes widened, and his pupils turned to pinpoints.

"Conrad, don't play stupid with me. Where is she?"

"G-g-gone."

The rush of blood in his ears almost drowned out the feeble excuses that came out of Conrad's mouth, but he heard a word that set his teeth gnashing together.

Well, not a word so much as a description.

"...that lady you were with who..."

"That lady I was with? She came back here?"

Conrad stopped speaking and froze in a decent impression of a prairie dog afraid that he was in the sights of a predator.

At least he had some self-preservation instincts.

"What did she do?"

"Do?" Conrad's nervous laughter said that he was holding back.

"Conrad!"

"She knows people. She said she was going to get me in trouble with churches and the city council and all kinds of things. It's not easy selling sex toys and keeping a good name with the surrounding businesses. I don't need any bad press, I-"

"You fired Eve, didn't you?"

The man's answer was barely a squeak of sound. "She made me."

"She made you? You don't have a solid bone in your body, do you?"

Conrad puffed up his chest. "You can't talk to me like that in my own store!"

"According to you, Michelle did it and you caved. I want to make sure that Eve is okay."

Conrad folded his arms across his chest and glared at him.
